Stides,
When people eventually ask where this project began, they’ll probably expect me to say it started with an idea.
The truth is, it started with a question.
Over the past year, I’ve become fascinated by one ordinary event that millions of us participate in without really observing. At first, I thought I was researching Daylight Saving Time. Eventually, I realized I was researching something much more interesting:
Attention.
Why do we participate in something so familiar without ever stopping to watch it happen?
As the project evolved, one thing became obvious. The investigation would only work if the curiosity at its center was genuine. It couldn’t be performed or scripted.
That’s why I asked you.
Because for nearly forty years, I’ve admired the way you think.
The last time I came to Boulder, you were beginning college. Neither of us knew where life would take us.
Now we have the opportunity to return together; not to revisit the past, but to investigate something neither of us ever imagined we’d care this much about.
I honestly don’t know where this investigation will lead.
That might be my favorite part.
Love,
Reeps

Every autumn…
millions of people
change their clocks.
Almost nobody
watches
the hour itself.

WHY THIS FILM EXISTS
WHY THIS FILM EXISTS
The Missing Hour is not trying to solve Daylight Saving Time.
It begins with a simpler—and perhaps more unsettling—question:
What happens when we finally pay close attention to something we have accepted our entire lives?
The repeated hour becomes our starting point.
The destination remains unknown.
That is exactly why we are making the film.

WHY YOU
WHY YOU
WHY YOU
I have spent a lot of my career sitting across from people with a camera between us.
Scientists.
Teachers.
Veterans.
Engineers.
Firefighters.
Founders.
Executives.
I have learned that audiences recognize genuine curiosity almost immediately.
It cannot be rehearsed.
It cannot be manufactured.
It cannot be directed into existence.
For many years, I have watched you ask questions most people never think to ask.
You do not rush toward certainty.
You stay with uncertainty a little longer.
You enjoy the process of understanding.
That is not something I can cast.
It is something I trust.

I DO NOT NEED YOU TO
Memorize lines
Manufacture reactions
Pretend to understand
Perform curiosity
Become someone else
Deliver perfect dialogue

HOW I WILL DIRECT YOU
HOW I WILL DIRECT YOU
You told me one of your concerns is that you are not an actor.
Good.
That is one of the reasons I asked you.
My job is not to direct you toward a performance.
My job is to direct your attention.
Sometimes I will ask you to slow down.
Sometimes I will ask you to look again.
Sometimes I will ask one more question.
Sometimes we will simply wait.
If we are doing this right, you will never feel like you are acting.
You will feel like you are genuinely trying to understand something.
That is the film.

INVESTIGATIVE PRINCIPLES
INVESTIGATIVE PRINCIPLES
Observe before concluding.
Ask before explaining.
Notice what others overlook.
Remain skeptical.
Remain open.
Protect genuine discovery.
Let evidence shape the story.
Follow what surprises us.
Allow the investigation to change our assumptions.

The purpose of this investigation is not to confirm a theory.
It is to ask better questions.
Every location, conversation, and observation exists to move us closer to understanding—not certainty.
The investigation will evolve.
We will evolve with it.

Boulder brings together two parts of this investigation.
It is where our shared history began.
It is also home to some of humanity’s most precise efforts to measure time.
The atomic reference does not observe Daylight Saving Time.
It does not gain an hour.
It does not lose one.
It simply continues.
We will arrive expecting answers.
The better outcome may be a more interesting question.

Investigation Briefing 001
Before our first Investigation Briefing, write down five questions about time or Daylight Saving Time that you have never seriously asked before.
Do not research them.
Do not answer them.
Do not try to make them sound intelligent.
Bring only the questions that genuinely interest you.
We will begin there.
